![]() After a mile or so, you will come to a fork and the road will split. In 0.6 mile turn right onto SE Middle Fork Road (#56). What does the mail consist of you wonder? Well, go see for yourself.įrom Seattle take I-90 East past downtown North Bend to Exit 34. This strange tradition goes back to the 1950's. Mailbox Peak actually has a mailbox on top with a summit log and a changing assortment of mail in it. Although this hike is a real challenge, mountain folks retain they're sense of humor with an inside joke. Often in Spring and early summer you will see mountaineers lugging full heavy weight packs up and down to condition for Mt. The grade of the trail makes it one of the much more difficult hikes in the I-90 corridor. Mailbox Peak is not the sort of hike that is chosen for a fun, easy outing. I have heard of another time when they carried a full-length ladder to the summit and back. The last time I visited the summit, one of them had carried up a solid iron street corner fire hydrant and left it next to the mailbox. There is a fire-fighter training center located at the south east foot of Mailbox Peak and trainees often use the rigourous path for physical conditioning. Getting passed by super-athletes running up this trail (they get to the peak in an hour) will make you feel even more old and tired.Mailbox Peak, located between the Snoqualmie middle-fork and southfork drainages, is the North-West end of a range that includes Mount Defiance, Bandera Mountain, and Granite Mountain. The round-trip distance to the peak is only 5.4 miles using this route, but your knees are going to hate you on the way down. The grade is relentlessly steep and your calf muscles will feel the burn. The old trail is the tough alternative route to the peak. There is good cell service, so be sure to upload that selfie to Facebook! The 4800' summit of Mailbox Peak offers an unobstructed view in every direction, as well as the famous mailbox. You will need all the motivation you can get to ascend this last portion of the trail, much of which is little improved and climbs steeply up the fall line. Congratulations, you still have a thousand feet to go! Now the scenery becomes spectacular as the trees thin out. At 3800' the new trail joins the old one. It is a bit of a dull climb in thick forest, at least until you reach 3000' where views open up in rocky areas. The new trail climbs the peak in long, moderately -graded switchbacks. If you want to go on the old, steep trail, continue walking up the gravel logging road another quarter mile. The new Mailbox Peak trail starts on the left a short distance up the road. Hike up the driveway to the upper parking lot, then continue walking on a gravel logging road. The bus drops you off at the lower parking lot at the Mailbox Peak Trailhead. Try to find a spot amidst the crowd of happy hikers, and enjoy the scenery. Atop the peak you will find the eponymous mailbox stuffed full of all sorts of odd things. The old and new trails eventually rejoin high on the peak, and the final climb up the windswept and bare ridge offers grand views. It can be a dull as well as tiring experience. Either trail involves a long ascent in a thick, view-less second growth forest. The old steep route, which gains the 4000' in less than three miles, remains popular with the fitness crowd. Completed a few years ago, this new trail takes 5 miles to reach the peak. With the increasing usage, the Department of Natural Resources, the land manager for the area decided that new, better-constructed trail was needed. Reaching the summit became the perfect Facebook/Instagram/Strava moment. The fact that the trail was steep and tough became an attraction, not a deterrent, for many. Word about the hike spread on various social media, and the number of hikers exploded seemingly overnight. Then the trail was discovered by athletes drawn by the 4000' of elevation gain. T en years ago, Mailbox Peak was a little known route used a by a few peak-baggers. Now it's easier, or should I say "less difficult"?^^''Īnyway, don't give up on triples with ETS2. ![]() That was before the new multimon feature. And we need an easier and less troublesome way to set it up. The guys at SCS just needs to realise that a lotta people playing ETS2 does use of triple screen setup, or even 4. ![]() I agree that setting up triples in iRacing is easier, but ETS2 is finally on the right path. Too much head movement or too much sensitivity, if you're using just one screen. Track IR with just one screen feels weird to me. Oh, so you have TrackIR too? I have the v5. I love this game and would rather be playing instead of trying to figure something out that is set up archaically. it is just not worth trying to experiment with things that should be in the graphic settings like Iracing. Thanks Cole for your assistance i guess for ETS2 ill go back to my track IR and keep triples for iracing. I think I need to give the guys a heads up about the new advanced multimon setup, unless someone wants to do it. BTW, I was the first guy at WSGF forums to support triple screen FOV mod for this game and it seems I'm still in the instruction page for ETS2 at there. So I think my help has no use anymore here. The smaller field of view also affects sense of speed which appears smaller than whan you are expecting from the single-monitor play. With the multi-view mode, the angle covered by all monitors combined with the same settings would be something like 250 degress so it would require quite unusual positioning of all the monitors to look right. The physical mismatch is not problem in that mode. The value used by the game in single monitor mode is much bigger as it needs to show you the mirrors and dashboard. It can be changed using the r_multimon_fov_horizontal parameter and the correct value corresponds to the view angle which is covered by the monitor from your position. These factors "stack up," producing an exponential increase in motor heating that sometimes leads to "thermal runaway" (uncontrollable heat rise), rapid deterioration of the insulation system and premature winding failure. This reduced efficiency is caused by both increased current (I) and greater resistance (R) due to heating. Motor heating and losses versus voltage unbalance.Ī motor often will continue to operate on unbalanced voltages, although less efficiently. ![]() This is true even if the percent variation calculates to the same unbalance.įigure 2 illustrates the typical percentage increases in motor losses and heating for various levels of voltage unbalance. The effect is more dramatic if the voltages of all three phases differ than if only one phase deviates from the other two. Noise and vibration levels also can increase due to voltage unbalance.Ī word of caution: Not all voltage unbalances are created equal. If the condition is severe enough, the motor may not produce enough torque to reach rated speed. Other effects of unbalanced voltages on motors are that the locked-rotor current of the stator winding (already relatively high) will be unbalanced in proportion to the voltage unbalance full-load speed will drop slightly and torque will decrease. The percentage of harmonic current may increase significantly due to both third- and even-order harmonics in the circuit. Although beyond the scope of this article, these currents cause additional heating in motors and supply wiring (sometimes including the neutral). ![]() Unbalanced voltages also can introduce harmful harmonic currents. The 5.4 percent voltage unbalance in Figure 1 adds 60-deg C (108-deg F) to the temperature rise, which means the life expectancy of the winding (and motor) would drop to about 1/64 of normal-a substantial and unacceptable reduction. If the current unbalance is 10 percent (1.10), the high-current phase will have at least 21 percent (1.10 2 = 1.21) more loss (loss = heat) than any other phase.įigure 1 clearly shows how voltage unbalance affects the current and temperature rise of a typical three-phase electric motor rated 5-hp, 230/460V, 60-Hz, 1725-rpm and 1.0 service factor.Įach 10-deg C (18-deg F) above the rated temperature rise will shorten the life of winding insulation by about half, so even a small increase in the percent voltage unbalance could seriously damage a motor. The additional heating (called "winding losses") is calculated by the formula I 2R, where I is current and R resistance. For example, voltage unbalance of 1 percent at the terminals of a fully loaded motor can result in phase current unbalance of 6 to 10 percent, which raises the operating temperature of the motor, reduces its energy efficiency and shortens its life. Voltage unbalance produces even larger phase current unbalances that can damage electric motors, generators, transformers and power supply wiring. "Single-phasing" (the complete loss of a phase) is the ultimate voltage unbalance condition for a three-phase circuit. Usually, the source of the problem is unequal line loads due to system voltage unbalance, different system impedances (voltage divided by current), the nature of the loads and the operating load on equipment, particularly motors. Unbalanced voltages can exist anywhere in a three-phase power distribution system. (Note that the 1.96 percent unbalance above exceeds the NEMA standard. For reliable motor operation, be sure to keep this limiting value in mind. Therefore, the percent unbalance is 1.96 percent:Īcknowledging possible differences in performance, NEMA MG 1-2006, Part 12.45 calls for three-phase motors to "operate successfully" at rated load if voltage unbalance at the motor terminals is 1 percent or less. For example, with line-to-line voltages of 460, 467 and 450, the average voltage is 459, and the maximum deviation from average is 9. ![]() Photonic Dirac cone has been discovered in two-dimensional photonic crystals of dielectric cylinders. Capture One still offers more latitude to push some of its tools, with a view to being creative rather than “accurate”. Unlike Capture One, which is built around layers for adjustments or masks, DxO PhotoLabs hides away the various layers in the "Local Adjustments" tab and employs some quirky floating menus to access the tweakable options.įor the most part the interface is intuitive, and the tools do what you want them to do. Some things are clunky compared to Capture One, such as the extra keystroke required to output a final image, but switching between programs is always going to require relearning some keystrokes and looking for tools in menus. Things such as dropping in a gradient to pull back dynamic range in the sky, or brushing in a layer across a subjects face to lift the highlights, are easy to complete in DxO PhotoLabs. Version 6 of DxO PhotoLabs now has a keystone tool as well, which was something I struggled to live without for the precise nature of our studio work. DxO keeps up with Capture One’s functionality very nicely. The power tools for me when using Capture One were its superior application of healing brushes, and the ability to create layers and masks to seriously fine tune an image. This means when I open a new folder of RAW files I can have my personal style of defaults applied right out of the gate. I created my own set of defaults, which DxO let you set in the preferences. Too much contrast, too much sharpening and too much vibrance. Some of the tools are very heavy handed, and indeed the default settings were too pimped up for my tastes. I wish they just put the stuff that works into a single edition and stop with the malarkey. There’s a touch too much marketing in play here, with fancy names for various “modules” and the option to upgrade to the “elite” version where all the best modules are already loaded. There's room to simplify the tool range in my view – even the noise reduction interface offers four different engines to choose from. At times the interface is cluttered with options that I don’t really care about, especially the automated features that try to make your image jump off the page with the click of a button. The range of manipulation tools available are impressive. When you edit a file those changes are stored into a local file next to your RAW file, making it easy to take your work from one computer and move to another. You point the software at your folder of RAW files and it builds a quick and dirty index of the contents, which are stored locally on your machine. Once you get control of the sheer variety of tools on offer, DxO starts to look like a genuine alternative to Capture One or Lightroom.ĭxO PhotoLab ditches the catalogues and libraries, in favour of more simplified editing. But it does deliver professional results. The defaults tend to be a little heavy handed for my style, and need dialling back for practical use. It also plays nicely with LUMIX cameras – but more on that later. What’s on offer is a lot of good technology, a half decent user interface and some simple pricing advantages. Today there are tonnes of options on the market, admittedly most of them "not quite right".ĭxO PhotoLabs is feature rich and quick to learn. Capture One was a clear winner back then. ![]() Back then Aperture on MacOS was the main alternative, or you had to pull images through one by one in Photoshop. We’re talking more than two decades ago when version 3 hit the internet and Lightroom didn’t even exist yet. ![]() I’ve been a Capture One fan since the early days. After an appalling lack of camera support from Capture One in 2022 I started looking seriously at my alternatives.
